Overview

Purpose of the job:
Facial modeling is one of the most technically complex, and creatively challenging areas of organic modeling. It requires a mixture of high level artistic capabilities, as well as technical skills to be able to solve some of the most challenging problems that come up in a production. It is an area that can take some people several years to develop the skills to be a high level contributor. The skills needed crossover many disciplines with the main purpose being bringing the facial performance of the actor through to the target asset as close as possible. Facial Modelers handle all the hero head modeling to ensure they meet the studio standards in terms of topology and edge flow. They work with the DI4D process aiding in transfers and sculpting correctives. A deep understanding using non linear blendshapes to create complex motion, preserving volume, and introducing skin sliding is needed. Knowledge of FACS shapes is essential as Facial Modelers work closely with the Animation department in troubleshooting complex facial shots.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
• Strong understanding of topology edge flow and how it relates to wrinkles on the face.
• An understanding of Facial Action Coding System (FACS)
• Experience working with facial blendshapes
• Experience working with 3D scan data
• Face anatomical knowledge of facial muscles and their function
• An understanding on how to extract key face shape information from an expression and incorporate it into a character’s facial puppet.
• Experience shot modeling in a feature film environment
• Complete tasks within production deadlines while being largely self-directed
• The ability to work collaboratively with other artists providing guidance or mentorship if needed.
• Work closely with the riggers in the case of character models to ensure models work smoothly within the rigging pipeline as well as the facial modeling pipeline.

Education and/or Experience Required:
• 3+ years of experience creating high resolution, photorealistic characters or creatures for feature films.
• The ability to use a wide range of scan data captured from an actor’s performance.
• Comfortable in a Maya production environment.
• Zbrush and Mudbox experience is preferred
• Experience with R3dS Wrap
• Must have excellent communication and organizational skills
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Python Scripting a plus
