Head of 2D

All applicants must reside in the United States or British Columbia/Ontario if applying within Canada.

We are currently seeking a Head of 2D for our company. This is a key position that will advise the VFX Supervisors and Creative Directors regarding the technical and creative capabilities and limitations to work collaboratively and provide solutions. The Head of 2D works closely with specialist department Supervisors and the Head of Digital to bring to life our client’s vision. The Head of 2D reports directly to the Head of Digital.

This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise on 2D workflow to aid VFX Supervisor/Creative Director and Producer in bidding and shot methodology planning.
  • Interpret creative needs into actionable tasks.
  • Identify, refine, and establish 2D workflow based on the available resources and established software and hardware.
  • Oversee the 2D look development of key shots/sequences in conjunction with 2D look dev leads and supervisors.
  • Proactively communicate with relevant Supervisors and Production team members to ensure all necessary individuals and departments are aware of shot statuses and potential issues.
  • Select, mentor, train and manage teams of artists.
  • Provide artist performance feedback to direct reports and management.
  • Attend dailies, interviews, administrative and managerial meetings as required.
  • Assist in setting up comp scripts for Nuke assets, looks, methodologies and dispersing to 2D teams, if requested.
  • Meet with multiple Producer and Project Supervisors for 2D sequence awareness.
  • Work with production teams to interpret and achieve client notes as it relates back to pipeline efficiencies.
  • Working with compositors to achieve creative goals in most efficient manner possible.
  • Attend dailies sessions.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the 2D teams.
  • Mentor artists.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8-years experience within live action VFX.
  • Minimum 2-years experience as a 2D Supervisor with a proven track record of delivering shows, driving methodology and leading teams of artists.
  • Expert knowledge of Nuke.
  • Working knowledge of Maya, a plus.
  • Experience compositing with full CG environments.
  • Experience in 2D Look Dev for both characters and environments.
  • Experience in communicating client notes to artists.
  • Knowledge and understanding of render passes provided by Lighting.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to delegate tasks as well as work on-the-box.
  • Positive attitude, hard worker.
  • Experience leading and mentoring others.
  • Collaborative leadership style; always working to achieve common goals in terms of delivery and quality.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication including conflict resolution, negotiation, note interpretation, creative to technical translation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priories or new technology / processes as required.

  • Please provide a portfolio of work that demonstrates production experience with Nuke Compositing.
  • Zoic is a Maya/Vray/Nuke/Unreal studio.
