Overview

Reporting to the matte painting supervisor, the Matte Painter creates photorealistic
environments and landscapes as 2D, 2.5D and 3D matte paintings that will either embellish or
replace live action footage in television or feature films. Your work may include modelling,
texturing, look development, lighting, and re-projection of rendered images and photographic
reference.

Primary responsibilities:

● Create photorealistic digital paintings and elements that match concept art and
aesthetic utilizing 2D and 3D software and processes.
● Provide or acquire photographic reference materials for shot and environment creation.
● Combine painting skills with 3D animation software with a knowledge of photography,
practical and digital modeling, and design to create 2D, 2.5D and 3D paintings.
● Use 3D software of your choice to model, texture, and render simple assets for use in a
3D environment.
● Integrate imagery and renderings into live action plates and to be indistinguishable from
the live action plate element, matching the lighting, color, and perspective of the shot.
● Work closely with the matte painting and show supervisors to determine best methods
to complete work in a timely manner and ensure that the shots meet planned concept
design requirements.
● Make changes to the matte paintings to address specific client and supervisor notes.

Qualifications and Skills:

● Demonstrate a strong foundation in understanding light, color, composition, and
perspective.
● Knowledge of Photoshop, basic knowledge of Blender (or 3D modeling package
equivalent ex.Maya, 3DS Max), Basic understanding of Nuke.
● Houdini, substance painter, zbrush experience is a plus.
● Experience with a raytrace renderer (Vray, Arnold) is a plus

proprietary software.

● A positive, can-do attitude
