Overview

Animal Logic – the studio that brought you The LEGO Movie – is looking for a Technical Surfacing Artist. The Surfacing Artist is responsible for giving models the visual surface qualities that make them appear believable. Surfacing can encompass texture painting, procedural texturing, shading networks, sculpting, grooming and UV layout. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to the Surfacing Supervisor and Artist Management.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Delve into the technical side of surfacing by supporting the creation of high quality digital texture/lookdev that meet all the technical and aesthetic standards for the project
  • Troubleshoot shaders and renders, as well as surfacing tools and pipeline
  • Create photo-realistic textures, either hand painted or procedural to a level of detail necessary for production assets
  • Create photo-realistic (physically plausible) shading
  • Create procedural grooms as required for the project
  • Take direction from Surfacing Lead, and present solutions or questions
  • Participate in reviews as required; be willing to show work in progress
  • Pro-actively escalate technical issues to more senior artists or lead
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner and adhere to set deadlines
  • Assist with project clean up and archiving on an ongoing basis
  • Follow all department guidelines and common practices
  • Stay up-to-date on technology and the entertainment industry

Requirements:

  • 3+ years’ experience on feature films, TV and/or animated feature working on high quality texturing, shading and surfacing (preferably on photo-realistic assets)
  • Proficiency demonstrated through past project work and/or reel/portfolio
  • Technical background with ability to assist in troubleshooting surfacing related areas such as shaders, renders, and surfacing tools
  • Thorough understanding of, and experience working in, a physically based shading system
  • Proven ability with node-based procedural shading
  • Experience with node-based or procedural grooming and/or set dressing tools
  • Proven ability in surfacing and shading
  • Production experience in Maya and Mari
  • Experience in a modern raytracing package
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • A passion for making beautiful looking photo-realistic hard surface cg objects by combining strong visual and technical skills
  • Excellence in problem solving and balancing quick turnaround with long term quality
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to efficiently organise and prioritise work across multiple areas
  • Ability to work solo as well as collaboratively within a team environment
  • Ability to take direction and feedback and apply this to assets or shots moving forward

The following would be considered a bonus:

  • Experience with Houdini
  • An understanding of lighting and colour theory in feature film production
  • Knowledge and/or experience with grooming, hair/fur or instancing tools – preferably in Houdini
  • Sculpting experience – preferably with Mudbox
  • Experience scripting in Python
  • Experience with Nuke
  • Knowledge or experience with USD
  • Advanced degree or significant training in at least one or more of the following disciplines:  computer graphics, computer science, digital media, filmmaking, photography, graphic design / illustration, foundation arts (drawing, painting, sculpture)
