Animal Logic – the studio that brought you Peter Rabbit – is looking for Rough Layout Artists. The Layout Artist is responsible for translating sequences from storyboards to CG sequences and cameras for both previsualization and layout purposes. They will ensure that camera and lensing work is consistent and in the cinematic style as directed by the Layout Supervisor and film’s Director. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to the Layout Supervisor and Artist Management.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Establish the cinematic staging and camera positioning as directed by the Layout Supervisor or Director
  • Work closely with the Layout Supervisor to implement a lensing style and camera language which is in alignment with the director’s vision for the film and it’s narrative
  • Incorporate posed and rough animated elements, that will guide framing and story, to a high standard
  • Interpret storyboards and recreate them into a 3D world; provide solutions and new ideas to creative briefs, pushing creative boundaries
  • Clearly understand the creative requirements of a sequence and deliver these creative goals in a timely manner and to a high standard
  • Contribute creative feedback when required and be willing to assist junior team members
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the processes of the adjoining departments (e.g. Animation, Assembly) in relation to
  • Animal Logic’s pipeline and communicate with these departments as needed
  • Establish the settings of the camera, including set dressing, by utilizing department tools and workflows
  • Adhere to deadlines and anticipate, communicate and troubleshoot technical issues with Production
  • Become proficient with the department’s proprietary tools and provide feedback; understand the department pipeline including all assets and tools, and their purpose
  • Provide technical setups of shots to downstream departments
  • Help provide solutions to creative briefs through existing tools & processes
  • Assist junior team members with technical challenges
  • Keep abreast of relevant and related emerging techniques and technologies

Requirements:

  • 3+ years’ experience in feature animation, VFX and/or animated television with a focus in Layout
  • Proficiency demonstrated through past project work and/or reel
  • Working knowledge and understanding of 3D software packages used in digital film production, in particular Maya
  • Ability to produce camera work using knowledge and understanding of cinematography, composition and layout/previs techniques, such as staging and framing rules
  • Previous experience in camera animation and scene set-up, utilizing traditional camera techniques and the principles of translating storyboards to 3D
  • Ability to edit, ensuring continuity over a sequence of shots and the film
  • Excellent visual communication skills, with the ability to convey ideas utilizing 3D or 2D mediums, including but not limited to drawing
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality shots within production deadlines
  • Recognised post-secondary qualification in animation, film or related field preferable
  • A demonstrated passion for Layout, picture cinematography, cinematographic history, staging and directing
  • Enthusiasm, positivity, initiative and talent, coupled with an understanding for taking direction
  • Have an “eye” for picture composition and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a flexible approach with an openness to new workflows and tool sets
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to receive and apply feedback, sharing knowledge as needed
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills
  • Ability to work solo as well as collaboratively within a team environment

Salary range CAD$70 – 125k and extended medical benefits. In addition, we include a comprehensive benefits package with paid vacation time, extended medical and dental, AD&D, LTD and Life insurance. Our Vancouver studio is within the creative precinct of Yaletown and is currently working on DC Super Pets, set for release in 2022.
